Chipotle Mexican Grill (NASDAQ: CMG) is piloting an autonomous drone delivery service in partnership with Zipline, targeting the Dallas area. The initiative, dubbed "Zipotle," will deploy drones from a Rowlett, Texas location, lowering orders via a droid named "Zip" to customers below. Despite the innovation, CMG shares dipped slightly in early trading as investors weighed the feasibility of the venture.

The Department of Transportation's recent relaxation of drone regulations has spurred such experiments. Chipotle's Chief Strategy Officer Curt Garner acknowledged the limited reach of drones, suggesting a single restaurant might serve entire neighborhoods. The market's tepid reaction underscores the challenges of scaling aerial delivery in urban environments.
